Meet former footballer of Bar Bar Shah: Mohammad Akbar Malik

Srinagar, June 23: Bar Bar Shah area has produced many star footballers. Like Pele of Kashmir Late Farooq Sahab, Late Abdul Qayoom Rather, Gulzar Ahmad Dar, Masrat Rather, Tajamul, Shafiq Ahmad Lone, Jabheer Ahmad, and many others. The role of SP college ground in the careers of all the players in the area is great. The players viewed the ground as their courtyard.

Ghulam Mohammad Malik, the father of Mohammad Akbar Malik, was a good player of hockey as well as football from SP School. Mohammad Akbar Malik was born on 1 March 1961 Bar Bar Shah. He went to Jamaat-E-Islamia School Bar Bar Shah, SP Higher Secondary School, and MP High School. For 12 Class he rejoined SP School. He pursued Graduation from Amar Singh College and LLB from Law Department Kashmir University.

He played football from his childhood. He played first School National in 1978 and second in 1979. In 1979 he played at All India Rural National Championship and then in 1980 again held at Srinagar. He was shortlisted for India Camp for International School National Football Tournament held at Jakarta. He represented the state at Junior National twice. He officially began his career from Bar Bar Shah FC. Then he joined and played as captain from Azam Sports for a year. After that, he joined one of the leading club Cosmos. He has also been part of Iqbal Sports and KMD Mohammaden and has captained both the teams.

On 27 October 1983, he joined AG’s office on Sports Quota. He played as a defender(stopper back). His head work was one of the best. He scored many goals on corner kicks. He played a tough game with cool temperament. He observed opponents keenly, who were hardly able to beat him. He played like a wall. He on account of his hard work made his name among top defenders of the state. He represented the state five times at Santosh Trophy.

He played thrice Rovers Cup (Mumbai) and twice Durand Cup( Delhi). He played for continuously 20 years at All India AG’s Football Meet held at different states of India. He played all major tournaments of India from the state team and other teams. He also played all top tournaments of state. Also, he was among the best Athlete and Swimmer of his time.

He is a qualified AFC D License Coach and presently he is the coach of AG’s Football Team. He is also the Selector of CAG’s department India. He also played important role in creating AG’s Football Team, which employs 4 players every year. He is a very helpful and humble person. He has received many awards and trophies. On 9 January 2020 at Jaipur, he received the Life Time Achievement award at All India AG’s Meet.
